A passport is an internationally recognized travel document attesting to the identity and nationality of
the bearer. A passport indicates that its bearer is entitled to receive the protection and assistance of
the diplomatic and consular officer of their country while abroad. In essence, it is a request on the part
of the issuing government that officials of foreign governments permit the bearer to travel or sojourn
(take temporary residence) in their territories and afford them all lawful aid and protection.

Definition of a Passport Card
The passport card is a wallet-sized card that can only be used for land and
sea travel between the United States and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and
Bermuda. The card will provide a less expensive, smaller, and more convenient
alternative to the passport book for those who travel frequently to these
destinations by land or by sea. It is NOT valid for travel by air.
