Hazardous materials / chemicals can be released into the environment through a number of means. Accidents can happen at railroads, highways and manufacturing plants. In many cases, we cannot see or smell anything out of the ordinary.

In the event of an emergency, public safety agencies will provide information to the public. Pay close attention to radio or television emergency alert stations (EAS) and diligently follow any instructions given.

Many people think that chemicals only show up in the workplace. This isn't true. They are to be found everywhere including our homes. Some everyday chemicals used around our homes include:

• Oven Cleaners
• Detergents
• Pesticides
• Flammable solvents

Before using any chemicals, always read the label. There are many different types of labels, but if a chemical is hazardous, the label will tell you. Get in the habit of reading the labels on all containers and follow all instructions.

Chemicals also play important roles in the workplace. However, they are also the source of many workplace hazards. You have a right to know about any chemical hazards in the workplace. This is why the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) created the Hazard Communication Standard (HazCom).
