State Controller’s Property Tax Postponement (PTP)
Sutter County Treasurer and Tax Collector, Steven Harrah, is happy to announce that the State Controller's Property Tax Postponement (PTP) has been reinstated after being suspended by the State Legislature back in 2009.
The program allows homeowners who are 62 years of age or older, blind, or have a disability, to defer current-year property taxes on their principal residence, providing they meet certain criteria, which include 40 percent equity in the home and an annual household income of $35,500 or less.
Applications may be picked up at the Sutter County Tax Collector’s Office at 463 2nd Street, Yuba City or you can download the application package from the State Controller’s Office website.
To be eligible for the PTP program, a homeowner must apply and meet the PTP eligibility requirements each year.
The program has limited funding and applications will be considered and approved on a first come first serve basis.
The State Controller's Office (SCO) accepts PTP applications from October 1 to February 10 each year.
The interest on the postponed taxes is 7% per year and the total becomes due and payable when the homeowner:
- Moves or sells the property
- Transfers title
- Defaults on a Senior lien
- Refinances
- Dies
- Chooses to obtain a reverse mortgage
- or the SCO learns the postponement was granted in error
