West Nile Virus
June 27, 2006
According to the Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California MVCAC only one human case of West Nile virus (WNV) has been confirmed in California so far this year. The victim was in Kern County and had to be hospitalized. To date, WNV has been detected in 13 of California's 58 counties. In 2005, WNV killed 18 people in California and threatened the lives of hundreds of others with neuro-invasive diseases like West Nile-related encephalitis and meningitis.

Beginning on Tuesday June 27th, 2006 at approximately 8:45 p.m., the rural towns of Meridian and Robbins in Sutter County will be sprayed with ULV foggers weekly. Beginning Wednesday, June 28th, 2006, the towns and cities of Plumas Lake, Wheatland, Olivehurst, Linda, East Marysville, Tierra Buena, Live Oak and Sutter will also be sprayed with ULV foggers. Also, fogging will commence at approximately 8:45 p.m. Spray routes may not include every street, but are designed to reduce migrating populations of mosquitoes, targeting them just after dusk when they are most active. No route will last longer than 3 hours. Fogging will continue until a significant drop is seen in the mosquito population. The insecticide will be the chrysanthemum-based Pyrethrin.

Tobacco Control Laws Workshop
June 08, 2006

The Sutter County Health Department commends local efforts to reduce tobacco sales to our youth. The STAKE Act (Stop Tobacco Access to Kids Enforcement) and Penal Code 308(a) are state laws that allow civil penalties to be levied on store owners who sell tobacco products to persons under 18 years of age. The STAKE Act requires that sellers of tobacco products check the ID of anyone who looks younger than age 18. Penal Code 308 (a) requires specific signage at points of sale and can assign a misdemeanor with fines and penalties to storeowners and clerks who violate the law.

The Sutter County Health Department, in conjunction with the Sutter County Sheriff’s Department, Yuba City Police Department, the Sutter County District Attorney’s Office and the Alcoholic Beverage Control Office will present “Tobacco Control Laws That Affect Retail Businesses Workshop 2006” for local storeowners, managers and all clerks on Wednesday, June 21, from 3:30 - 4:30 pm, at the Sutter County Health Department Auditorium, 1445 Veteran’s Memorial Circle, Yuba City.

The main components of both the STAKE Act and Penal Code 308 (a) will be reviewed and discussed. The workshop is specifically for stores who are licensed to sell tobacco products. Seating is limited to 50 attendees. Call 822-7215 (276) to make your reservation by June 15th. Thank you for supporting the health of our youth in Sutter County.
