This is March for Meals Month
March 19, 2015

Sutter County Board of Supervisors Chairman Ron Sullenger this week presented a proclamation to Jane Stan, the nutrition services and program manager for the Area 4 Agency on Aging, declaring the month of March the March for Meals Month.

Meals on Wheels America established the National March for Meals Campaign in 2002, to recognize the anniversary month in 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed into law a measure that established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years or older.

In Yuba and Sutter counties, the Home Delivery Meals Program serves 100 people 60 years of age or older. The meals allow seniors to live longer in their homes, which is the preference of 90 percent of seniors, according to surveys. The program targets those older adults who are frail, lack a sufficient support network to meet their basic needs, no longer drive, are homebound due to chronic disease and are living at or below the Federal Poverty level.

There are an estimated 23,000 people age 62 or older in Yuba and Sutter counties. The number will double by year 2035.
